FAQs
How does Assisted Stretch work?
Using gentle traction, circumduction and 3D (full joint range) stretching, Assisted Stretch targets the entire joint capsule, not just the muscles and connective tissues. When stretching on your own, you’re having to work to maintain position, keeping the muscles tense. Because we hold your body weight for you, and carefully keep you in optimal alignments, you’re able to relax completely. The effectiveness of the stretch is far beyond what’s possible with self-stretch.
How is “Guided Stretch” different from “Assisted Stretch”
In assisted stretch your consultant is working hands-on with you on the stretch table (and occasionally standing or on the floor). In guided stretch your consultant will demonstrate the movement or position and then give you verbal cues to help you get the most benefit from that stretch. They’ll often also teach you some simple anatomy so you can better visualize and articulate your body. Online and in person guided stretches are available.
Which is right for me?
We suggest a blend. The combination of being moved and stretched and then being coached to move and stretch your own body is so powerful. During work on the table your consultant has identified the areas that need more focus, now through guided stretch you learn how to move and unlock them on your own.
Our goal is for you not to need us at all. But to love us so much that you still come in!
Who is Assisted/Guided Stretch for?
Everyone needs to stretch. Your age, activity level and goals will determine the type of session our stretch consultant provides. But rest assured, it will be perfect for you.
Why do I need Assisted/Guided Stretch?
As you age, your fascia (connective tissue) loses elasticity and the joint capsules tighten. Regular stretching helps to slow and even reverse this process. Because your body is relaxed you get the maximum benefit of the stretch and lasting results.
What are the benefits of Assisted/Guided Stretch?
Increase range of motion
Reduce pain
Accelerate injury recovery
Calm the nervous system reducing stress and increasing energy
Sharpen focus
Enhance performance in sports
Improve circulation
Move with more grace and finesse
Improve body alignment and posture
Improve body awareness
Improve motivation towards movement and fitness
What qualifications do the Stretch Consultants have?
Our Stretch Consultants come from a variety of backgrounds including kinesiology, athletic therapy, massage therapy, yoga, dance, and personal training. Everyone at The Stretch Experience goes through our proprietary program and receives a Certificate in Assisted Stretch. This ensures that any consultant you work with is fluent in our specific method.
Prep for your first stretch
What is an Assisted Stretch session like?
Sessions can vary widely depending on your needs and goals. This is a typical session.
We start with a postural and movement assessment, set goals and then get to the good stuff.
You get to relax on the table while your stretch consultant moves your body through a variety of stretches based on your needs. Our method of stretching keeps you flowing and moving, breathing and relaxing. No static held stretches here. Expect your consultant to stay in communication with you to ensure that the stretch is at just the right intensity. (Yummy not ouch-y!) They will explain their findings and help you learn about your body while keeping you focused, relaxed and calm.
Lastly, we’ll teach you a take-home stretch. Over time, these stretches will become your home stretch routine. (You of course have the option to opt out of this, although we find it a very important and enjoyable part of the whole ‘Stretch Experience’)
What is a Guided Stretch Session like?
If you’re working online, you and your stretch consultant will sign into a zoom meeting. (You’ll find the link and password in the email confirmation listed next to the ‘location’.)
Your consultant will check in to see how you’re feeling and if you have any specific areas on which you’d like to focus. They’ll start with a warm-up, mobility movement and then into active or ‘flowing’ stretches and finally into deeper stretches that we sustain* for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on your needs.
* We strongly believe that stretches should not be ‘held’. That’s a dirty word in this family. Your consultant will coach you in ‘sustaining’ a stretch. If we’ve piqued your interest and you want to know more, just ask! We love this subject!
What do I wear?
Dress for your stretch session as you would a yoga or exercise class. Your stretch consultant will be taking your body into some wonderfully, ahem, ‘open’ positions. So please be sure you are comfortably concealed. Either clean bare feet or a fresh pair of socks works for us. If you tend to get chilly go for long sleeves and socks. We have options of blankets and heated tables to make sure you’re cozy and relaxed to the max.
Should I warm up before my Stretch?
Not necessary. This method of dynamic, active, flowing and sustained stretching is gentle and builds in intensity over the course of the session. Basically, your warm-up is built right in. Do drink plenty of water before and after your stretch.
Can I schedule my stretch for before or after my workout?
Yes. Both have their benefits so this comes down to your preferences and goals. A pre-workout stretch will warm up your muscles, and increase your range of motion. Many people find that they have ‘personal bests’ after stretches. Post workout stretches speed recovery, reduce soreness, help to lengthen and tone muscles and calm you down. After a few sessions, you’ll have a feel for what feels best.
How long do Stretch sessions last?
30, 60 & 90 minute stretches are available.
Want something else? Get in touch and we’ll sort it out.
How early should I arrive?
Please give yourself 10 minutes just in case you have trouble finding us. There is no paperwork to fill in, as your intake form and waiver are done online when you pay for your session. During your first session, your stretch consultant will review your intake form with you.
Will it hurt?
We meet you where you are. Because each session is tailored to you and your goals, you’re never in danger of being pushed too far too fast. Gentle, comfortable stretching has been proven far more effective than the old fashion ‘no-pain no-gain’ method. You’re going to love it, we promise!
I’m injured, should I still come in?
Consult a medical professional to get cleared for stretching, especially after surgery or an accident. Once you’re cleared, we’ll take special care of your tender spots.
Can I get stretch if I am pregnant?
Absolutely. Expectant Moms feel all kinds of sore spots that we can help with. Your session will be extra gentle due to the increased Relaxin hormone that your body is naturally producing. Please check with your doctor first and be sure to let us know that you’ve got a bundle of joy along for the stretch.
How often should I come?
Ideally, we’d love to see you on the stretch table once per week. Depending on your goals, availability and budget, more or less frequency may be appropriate. Even stretching with us once per month can be of benefit. Some of our goal-oriented clients come as many as 3x/week and swear by it. Everyone is different, so we’ll find the groove that works for you.
